Interview with Joy and John Thomas, owners

Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I’ve always enjoyed working with kids. From a very young age I knew that when I grew up, my job would revolve around children; I thought an elementary school teacher would be a natural fit. My best friend invited me to join her ballet class when I was 10. Through a series of events, I ended up teaching dance for about 12 years at another dance studio. About six years ago, with John’s encouragement and support, I decided to go out on a limb and start a dance studio that revolved around young kids in Castle Rock.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Our goal at Kids Dance is to focus on the needs of families with younger children. We offer classes for ages 2 to 12 in the areas of ballet, tap, hip hop, jazz, musical theater, poms and creative movement. We think it’s important that a child have fun while still learning proper technique and dance etiquette. Our facility also offers a large lobby with viewing windows into the dance room so parents can watch class, socialize with friends, work on their computer, read a book or simply relax.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love it that I have a chance to get to know and interact with hundreds of kids throughout the course of a week. I love it that I can be creative and active as well as have variety in my lesson plans. I’m also extremely blessed to be able to work along side my husband (who does all the administrative and behind the scenes work) and have a flexible schedule so I can spend quality time with my own kids.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge is finding quality instructors who have a natural gift for working with children.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We are currently in the process of expanding our facility. We’re hoping to offer new styles of dance and maybe even classes for teens and adults.
